Is it a 'gut Feeling' or Subconscious Observation?

Author: Michele Burghardt

Though no one really understands how hypnotherapy works, Michael Posner, an emeritus professor of Neuroscience at the University of Oregon in the US began studying the mechanical processes of the subconscious mind. His research is showing how hypnosis provides a new view into the mechanics of normal brain function.

Everything we see at the poker table is converted into a pattern and sent to the primary visual cortex of the brain. Your brain recognizes it, and then sends it on to a higher functioning part of your brain which deciphers the information and begins to catalogue it. The same process occurs for every one of your five senses. Let's call this 'info-in'. For those of you that don't know, your subconscious mind runs the day-to-day functioning of your body like breathing, blinking, walking, etc. It's also the part of your brain that monitors your emotional state.

We're surprised to learn there is 10 times more information flowing outward than upward. We are flooded by information coming from the higher levels of our brain into our conscious awareness, 'info-out'.

This info-out is great for poker players because it has already been internally interpreted by the brain based on prior experiences and can override what appears on the surface. That's the little 'gut' thing you feel. Your brain is sending you signals; you just haven't practiced trusting it enough to recognize it. This entire process happens automatically and within a nano-second.

Ok, so how can you start paying more attention? There are really two aspects to this situation. One is being aware of what your brain is telling you. The other aspect is having 'the guts' to act on the information. Hypnosis is a great tool to help in both of these areas.

Hypnosis is a process of relaxation which allows you to retrain your brain. Opening up your conscious awareness to the wealth of information your brain has stored can actually be done fairly easily. It's a mental exercise, so the more you do it - the easier it gets.

Quick -Easy Method

Take a few moments before you play to close your eyes, breath nice and evenly, and think about this situation:

Think about what your brain would look like if it were an information highway.
It could look like a freeway, computer wires, long corridors, wooded paths: the image you choose is perfect. Imagine on your highway that all the information leads directly back to you. As it comes to you, take just a moment and notice what that information flow feels like physically, it's that gut feeling.

As you notice your 'gut' feeling, take in a nice deep breath... and let that physical feeling get stronger and more noticeable. Intensify that feeling to make sure you recognize it when its there. Practice this a few time every day.

The more you acknowledge and trust your gut to make the play with a sense of 'yes', the more often your brain will send you readable signals. Like anything else, the more you practice the better you get.

Fortunately for poker players, men typically don't ask for this type of help. This gives you a huge advantage at the table because 90 percent of poker players are men. You can almost be sure your opponents aren't using these types of mental tools to win.

Everyone freely admits golf is 90 percent mental. Why would poker be any different? You can't control the cards or the play of your opponents. You can, however, go beyond poker strategy and learn how to master your mind game to give you a winning edge.
