Rules and History of Caribbean Stud Poker

Rules and History of Caribbean Stud Poker
Although Caribbean Poker is a card game, it is not considered by serious poker players to be a proper poker game. Caribbean Poker, also known as Caribbean Stud Poker, is a casino table game, and is played against the house, which means that it is not a game that can be beaten in the long term.

Rules of Caribbean Poker
The exact rules for Caribbean Poker vary from casino to casino, but typically, the following rules are used: You and the bank are dealt five cards each. After looking at your hand, and the first card in the bank's hand, you have the chance to either make a call bet, which increases your stake by twice your original ante amount; or surrender, which means the house wins your ante.

Next there is a showdown:

If the bank does not hold at least an Ace and a King in his hand, then all bets are void and the player will receive even money on their ante.

If the bank does have an Ace and a King, then the hands are compared using normal poker rules, and, if the player's hand beats the bank's then the player will receive an even payout on his ante, and fixed odds on his bet, depending on the hand - for example 50 to 1 on a Straight flush, or 2 to 1 on a Two Pair.

. One Pair or Less - Even
. Two Pair - 2 : 1
. Three of a Kind - 3 : 1
. Straight - 4 : 1 . Flush - 5 : 1
. Full House - 7 : 1
. Four of a Kind - 20 : 1
. Straight Flush - 50 : 1
. Royal Flush - 100 : 1

Players can also take part in a progressive jackpot feature - this involves dropping a chip into the chip acceptor after placing their ante. If they have a flush or better, then they will win the amount listed on the accumulator for that hand, regardless of the outcome of their bet. There are special jackpot payouts on the progressive meters of 10% of the meter for a Straight Flush, and 100% for a Royal Flush.

It is quite difficult to calculate a strategy for Caribbean Poker, at least in a casino, however, if you are playing online poker, you may be able to increase your chances using an odds calculator.

The History of Caribbean Stud Poker
It is not known exactly who invented Caribbean Poker, although it was thought to have originated on the island of Aruba. It was first played in the Holiday Inn and Casino during the late 1980s, and spread quickly through the Caribbean over the next few years. When the game reached Vegas in 1992, it was realised that the game in its default form was not rewarding enough to players, and the progressive accumulator jackpot was added.

Caribbean Poker has come back into fashion in recent years, after the World Poker Tour 2005 Tournament was held in the Holiday Inn and Casino in Aruba. It can be played in many Caribbean and Vegas Casinos, and even has variants played in Casinos in the UK. With the advent of online casino, it is also possible for those unable to make it to a casino to play.
